Paṇpuṭaiyārp paṭṭuṇṭu ulakam
Atuiṉṟēl maṇpukku māyvatu maṉ
English translation
The world survives because of the courteous; without them, it would sink into the earth and perish.
Listen
Explanation
The courteous people sustain the world through their virtue. Without their civilizing presence, human society would collapse into chaos and destruction. Courtesy is not mere politeness - it is a force that preserves civilization.

Story behind this kural
The village of Oakhaven was known for its bountiful harvests, but also for its quarrelsome villagers. Disputes over land and water were common, often escalating into bitter feuds. One year, a devastating drought struck. The well dried up, and the crops withered. Panic spread like wildfire. Only Elder Elara, known for her gentle nature, remained calm. She offered what little water she had, sharing it with everyone, even those who had wronged her. She organized the villagers, suggesting they dig a new well together, sharing the labor. Initially, some refused, still holding grudges. But witnessing Elara's selfless acts, one by one, they joined. They helped each other, putting aside their differences. Slowly, the new well was completed. When water finally gushed forth, it wasn't just the crops that revived, but also the spirit of Oakhaven. The village, once on the brink of ruin, began to thrive again, its people now bound by a newfound respect and unity.
