English Translation
No fear, no fear, there is no such thing as fear For anyone in this world here, there is no fear at all Even for the worthless words of those who belittle us No fear, no fear, there is no such thing as fear Even if the sky above crashes and falls down upon us No fear, no fear, there is no such thing as fear Even if we must live a life of begging for alms No fear, no fear, there is no such thing as fear We have a courageous heart even for trivial death No fear, no fear, there is no such thing as fear For desired possessions and sweet fame and glory No fear, no fear, there is no such thing as fear
Historical Context
Written during the Indian independence movement around 1908-1910, this poem became an anthem of courage for freedom fighters. Bharathiyar composed this when facing British persecution and imprisonment threats. The poem reflects the Vedantic philosophy of fearlessness (abhaya) and inspired countless revolutionaries including Bhagat Singh. It remains one of the most recited Tamil poems for building courage and self-confidence. The rhythmic repetition of "acchamillai" creates a hypnotic, mantra-like effect that reinforces the message of fearlessness.
