Historical Context
Written around 1906-1908 during the Swadeshi movement, "Murasu" uses the ancient symbol of the war drum to awaken Indians from colonial subjugation. The murasu (drum) was traditionally used in Tamil kingdoms to announce important events, call warriors to battle, and mark royal occasions. Bharathiyar transforms this into a metaphor for the call to freedom. The poem's rhythmic structure mimics drum beats, making it powerful when recited aloud. The reference to "vidi velli" (morning star/Venus) symbolizes the dawn of freedom approaching. This poem was banned by the British and copies were confiscated, which only increased its popularity among freedom fighters.
