English Translation
This is the beautiful land where my father and mother Live together in joy and happiness This is our glorious land, the Tamil country That shines by the Sindhu (Indus) expanse This is our home bounded by the Himalayas That grow higher than the sky This is what the blood that flows as life within our flesh Feels for all time The Ganges, Kaveri, Kanniyakumari, and Narmada Are like an ocean of nectar for us Dancing upon the golden sandy shores Is the prosperity of the Tamil land May the Tamil language live for a thousand years May its undying glory live on May the jeweled crown of our mother shine on earth May Tamil Nadu live forever

Composed around 1907-1909, this poem exemplifies Bharathiyar's ability to blend pan-Indian nationalism with Tamil regional pride. The poem celebrates India's geographic diversity - from the Himalayas to the rivers - while specifically honoring Tamil Nadu. The reference to "Sindhu" (Indus) invokes ancient India's boundaries. This dual identity - Indian and Tamil - was central to Bharathiyar's vision. He saw no contradiction between loving Tamil culture and being a patriotic Indian. The poem was sung at political rallies and continues to be performed at Tamil cultural events. The blessing "Aayiram aandu tamizh mozhi vaazhga" has become a popular Tamil saying.
