அறிவு அறிவு பேரறிவு அது வேண்டும் மனிதருக்கு நெறி காட்டும் விளக்கது நிலை பெறும் செல்வமது அறியாமை என்னும் இருள் அகற்றிடும் ஒளி அறிவே பிரியாது நிற்கும் துணை பெருமதிப்புள்ள செல்வமே கற்றோர் சொல் கேட்டிடு கல்வியை வளர்த்திடு மற்றோர் தவறு கண்டு மனதில் பாடம் பெற்றிடு அறிவின் வழி நடப்பவன் அழியாத புகழ் பெறுவான் செறிவான சிந்தனையில் சிறப்பான வாழ்வு வரும் மூடத்தனம் விட்டொழி மூளையைப் பயன்படுத்து தேடித் தேடிக் கற்றிடு தெளிவான அறிவு கொள்

English Translation
Knowledge, knowledge, great knowledge That is what humans need It is a lamp that shows the way It is wealth that stays permanent It is the light that removes The darkness called ignorance A companion that stays without parting It is wealth of great value Listen to the words of the learned Develop your education Seeing others' mistakes Take lessons in your mind One who walks the path of knowledge Will gain imperishable fame In concentrated thought A special life will come Abandon foolishness Use your brain Search and search and learn Gain clear knowledge
Historical Context
This poem reflects Bharathiyar's passionate advocacy for education and rational thinking. Written around 1910-1916, during a period when literacy rates were extremely low in colonial India. The comparison of knowledge to a lamp dispelling darkness echoes both Thirukkural and Upanishadic imagery. Bharathiyar believed that knowledge was the key to India's liberation - not just political but also social and spiritual. His call to abandon "மூடத்தனம்" (foolishness/superstition) was revolutionary for his time. This poem is used in educational settings to inspire students.
