அஞ்சுவது ஏன் மனமே நீ அன்னை சக்தி துணை இருக்க வெஞ்சினம் கொண்ட பகைவர் வந்தால் வீழ்த்துவாய் நீ என்றும் தளராமல் நிர்பயம் நிர்பயம் என்று சொல்லி நின்று நடைபோடு தலைநிமிர்ந்து துர்பலம் என்பதை தூர எறிந்து துணிவுடன் வாழ்வில் ஜெயம் கொள்வாய் சிங்கத்தின் குட்டிகள் நாமே என்று சிந்தனை கொள்ளடா இளைஞனே பங்கயத் தாள் அருள் பெற்றவர்கள் பயந்து ஒளிவதேன் பூமியிலே கடல் அலை போலே எழுந்திடுவோம் கனல் நெருப்பாக மாறிடுவோம் இடர்கள் வந்தாலும் ஏன் பயப்பது இறைவன் நம்மோடு இருக்கையிலே

English Translation
Why do you fear, O my mind When Mother Shakti is by your side If fierce enemies come with anger You will fell them, never wavering Saying fearlessness, fearlessness Stand and walk with head held high Throwing weakness far away With courage you will achieve victory in life We are the cubs of the lion, think thus O young one, hold this thought Those who have received the blessings of the Lotus-footed one Why should they hide in fear on this earth Let us rise like the waves of the ocean Let us transform into raging fire Even if troubles come, why be afraid When the Lord is with us
Historical Context
This poem embodies Bharathiyar's philosophy of "abhayam" (fearlessness), a central tenet borrowed from both Vedantic philosophy and the Bhagavad Gita. Written around 1909-1911, during intense British crackdowns on nationalists, this poem served as a spiritual armor for freedom fighters facing imprisonment and even death. The reference to "Annai Shakti" (Mother Power) reflects his worship of the Divine Feminine. The lion metaphor connects to both the national symbol and the idea of inherent nobility. Bharathiyar often addressed young people directly, urging them to throw off centuries of colonial subjugation through spiritual strength.
