தெய்வம் என்றால் என்ன என்பாய்? தெளிவாய்ச் சொல்வேன் கேளாய் மெய்யாய் நின்று உலகை நடத்தும் மேலான சக்தியே தெய்வம் எங்கும் நிறைந்து எல்லாம் வல்ல இறைவன் ஒருவனே உண்டு தங்கும் இடமெல்லாம் அவன் வீடு தரணியும் வானும் அவன் ஆடு மனிதர் அனைவரும் அவன் மக்கள் மதங்கள் எல்லாம் ஒன்றே இனிமேல் பேதங்கள் இல்லை இணைந்து வாழ்வோம் நன்றே காற்றில் அவனைக் காண்பாய் கடலின் அலையில் காண்பாய் ஊற்றுப் புனலில் காண்பாய் உன்னுள் இருப்பதும் காண்பாய் அன்பே தெய்வம் என்று அறிவாய் ஆருயிர் எல்லாம் அவனே என்றும் அழியாது நிற்பான் எல்லாம் படைத்த இறைவன்

English Translation
What do you mean by God, you ask? I shall tell you clearly, listen The supreme power that truly stands And governs the world is God Pervading everywhere, all-powerful There is only one Lord Wherever He dwells is His home The earth and sky are His domain All humans are His children All religions are truly one Henceforth there are no differences Let us live united, well In the wind you shall see Him In the waves of the sea you shall see Him In the spring water you shall see Him Within yourself you shall also see Him Know that love itself is God All dear lives are He alone He stands eternally, never perishing The Lord who created everything

This profound devotional poem showcases Bharathiyar's syncretic spiritual philosophy. Written around 1908-1912, influenced by Vedantic thought, Sufi poetry, and his association with spiritual leaders like Aurobindo. The poem boldly declares religious unity at a time of communal tensions in colonial India. Bharathiyar's vision of seeing God in nature and within oneself echoes the Upanishadic teaching "Tat tvam asi" (You are That).
