நல்லதோர் வீணை செய்தே அதை நலங்கெடப் புழுதியில் எறிவதுண்டோ சொல்லடி சிவசக்தி என்னை சுடர்மிகும் அறிவுடன் படைத்துவிட்டாய் நல்லதோர் வீணை செய்தே - அதை நலங்கெடப் புழுதியில் எறிவதுண்டோ வல்லமை தாராயோ - இந்த மாநிலம் பயனுற வாழ்வதற்கே சொல்லடி சிவசக்தி எனை சுடர்மிகும் அறிவுடன் படைத்துவிட்டாய் கொல்லும் வறுமையென்னும் கொடும் பாவியைத் துரத்தியே பணி கொள்வாயே விண்ணை இடிக்கும் தலை உயர்த்தி வெல்லும் களிப்போடு நானும் வாழ்வேன் மண்ணில் கிடக்கும் குலம் இல்லை வான் உயர பறப்பவர் போல் நடப்பேன் நல்லதோர் வீணை செய்தே அதை நலங்கெடப் புழுதியில் எறிவதுண்டோ வல்லமை தாராயோ இந்த மாநிலம் பயனுற வாழ்வதற்கே

English Translation
Having made a good veena, would one Throw it in the dust to be ruined? Tell me, O Shiva-Shakti, you have Created me with radiant intelligence Having made a good veena - would one Throw it in the dust to be ruined? Won't you grant me the strength To live usefully in this great land? Tell me, O Shiva-Shakti, you have Created me with radiant intelligence The cruel sin of killing poverty Chase it away and take me into your service With head raised high touching the sky I shall live with triumphant joy There is no community that lies in the dust I shall walk like those who fly high in the sky Having made a good veena, would one Throw it in the dust to be ruined? Won't you grant me the strength To live usefully in this great land?
Historical Context
This deeply philosophical poem (circa 1912-1914) uses the veena, the classical Tamil stringed instrument, as a metaphor for the human body and soul. Bharathiyar questions why the divine would create such an exquisite instrument (human being) only to let it waste away in poverty and misery. The poem addresses Shiva-Shakti (the divine masculine and feminine principle combined) - reflecting Bharathiyar's Shakta beliefs.
