கங்கை நதி புனித நதி கடவுள் பாதம் தொட்ட நதி மங்களம் சேர்க்கும் மாநதி மானிடர் போற்றும் தேவநதி இமயமலை உச்சியிலே தோன்றி இந்தியா முழுதும் பாய்ந்து வரும் அமையும் கரைகள் புண்ணியமே அன்னை போல் அணைக்கும் நதியே நீராடும் மக்கள் கோடி நித்தமும் வணங்கும் நதி பாராளும் பாரத நாட்டின் பாவனை உயிர்நாடி நதி காசியின் கங்கை புகழ் பெற்றது கண்கொண்டு காணும் அழகு ஆசியின் பெருமை சேர்க்கும் அருள்மிகு கங்கை அன்னை கங்கை நதி வாழ்க என்போம் கால காலம் பாய்ந்திடுக மங்காத புகழ் கொண்ட மாதா கங்கை வணங்குவோம்

Ganges is a sacred river A river touched by the Lord's feet A great river that brings auspiciousness A divine river praised by humans Originating at the peak of the Himalayas Flowing throughout all of India Its banks are themselves sacred A river that embraces like a mother Millions of people bathe in it A river worshipped daily The lifeline of the ruling nation of Bharat The river that is the pulse of sanctity The Ganges at Kashi is famous A beauty to behold with one's eyes Adding to the glory of Asia Mother Ganges full of grace Let us say "Long live river Ganges" May it flow for all eternity With unfading glory Let us worship Mother Ganges
Historical Context
Though Bharathiyar was deeply rooted in Tamil Nadu, his vision of India (Bharat) included reverence for national symbols like the Ganges. Written around 1910-1914, this poem reflects his pan-Indian nationalism that saw unity in the diversity of India's sacred geography. The Ganges (கங்கை - from Sanskrit Ganga) holds supreme position in Hindu spirituality as the river that descended from heaven. Bharathiyar's reference to Kashi (Varanasi) shows his appreciation for North Indian sacred sites. For him, Tamil identity and Indian identity were complementary, not contradictory. This poem bridges regional and national pride.
