ஞானம் என்பது என்ன - அது நாம் அறிவது எல்லாம் ஒன்றே என்பது தானம் கேட்பவர் யாரும் இல்லை - நாம் தர வேண்டியது ஒன்றும் இல்லை ஆணும் பெண்ணும் சரி என்போம் - இந்த அறிவை நமது நெஞ்சில் பதிப்போம் கோணலான பழஞ்சொல் வேண்டாம் - புது கொள்கை பூண்டு உயர்வோம் வான் மழை பெய்யும் போது - அது வறியவர் பணக்காரர் பேதம் காணாது தான் இறைவன் படைப்பு என்று - நாம் தானும் எல்லாரும் ஒன்றென்று உணர்வோம் கல்வி என்பது மூட நம்பிக்கையின் எதிரி - இது கண்ணைத் திறக்கும் விளக்கொளியாம் வல்லமை உள்ள மனிதர் எல்லாம் - உயர் வாழ்வில் ஞானிகள் ஆவர் மூட நம்பிக்கை வேண்டாம் - மனம் மோசம் போகும் வழி செல்லாதே தேடு ஞானத்தை நாளும் - உன் தெளிந்த அறிவே உன் துணையாகும் பகுத்தறிவே தெய்வம் என்போம் - அந்தப் பரமன் நமக்குத் தந்த கருவி தொகுத்த நூல்களைக் கற்போம் - என்றும் தூய அறிவில் நிலைத்து வாழ்வோம்

English Translation
What is wisdom? It is Knowing that all we understand is One There is no one asking for charity - we Have nothing that needs to be given We shall say men and women are equal - this Knowledge we shall imprint in our hearts We don't want crooked old sayings - let us Adopt new principles and rise When the sky rains - it does not See any difference between poor and rich Knowing that all are creation of God - we Shall realize we are all one Education is the enemy of blind superstition - this Is the lamp that opens eyes All capable humans - in noble Life become wise ones No blind superstition needed - don't Walk the path that ruins the mind Seek wisdom every day - your Clear knowledge will be your companion We shall say rational thinking is God - that Is the tool the Divine gave us Let us study the compiled texts - forever Let us live established in pure knowledge
Historical Context
This philosophical poem, written around 1912-1916, reflects Bharathiyar's rationalist and progressive thinking. He was deeply influenced by Western enlightenment ideas while remaining rooted in Indian spiritual traditions. The poem's declaration that "men and women are equal" was revolutionary for its time.
