இளமை இளமை இன்பமிகு இளமை இதயம் துடிக்கும் வளமை களமை கொண்டு எழுக என்று கனவுகள் அழைக்கும் தினமும் இளமைப் பருவம் வந்ததே இனிமேல் சோம்பல் வேண்டாமே தளரா நெஞ்சம் கொண்டிடு தரணி என்றும் உன்னிடமே கற்க வேண்டும் அறிவெல்லாம் காணக் கிடைத்த இப்பிறவி உற்ற துணையாய் உழைப்பிருக்க உலகை வெல்லும் ஒரு உறுதி இளமை ஒருமுறை தான் வரும் இழந்தால் மீண்டும் வருமோ? பழமை நினைத்து வருந்துவதேன் பாருக்கு முன்னே செல்லடா எழுந்திடு விழுந்தாலும் எழு ஏறிடு மலையின் உச்சியிலே தொழுதிடு உழைப்பை தெய்வமாய் தொண்டனாய் நிற்பாய் வெற்றியிலே

English Translation
Youth, youth, joy-filled youth The richness that makes the heart beat Rise up with vigor, thus Dreams call out every day The season of youth has arrived Henceforth let there be no laziness Keep an unfailing heart The world is always yours All knowledge must be learned This birth obtained for seeing With hard work as a true companion A resolve that conquers the world Youth comes only once If lost, will it come again? Why lament thinking of the past Go forth before the world Rise up, even if you fall, rise Climb to the peak of the mountain Worship hard work as divine You shall stand as a servant in victory
Historical Context
Written around 1912-1916, this poem captures Bharathiyar's message to India's youth during the freedom movement. He believed the nation's future depended on its young people rising with courage and determination. The poem reflects his own life philosophy - despite poverty and persecution, he never stopped working. The emphasis on hard work (உழைப்பு) as worship connects to the Bhagavad Gita's karma yoga. This poem is often quoted in Tamil Nadu schools to inspire students. The urgent tone reminds youth that time is precious and must not be wasted.
