மரபு மரபு நம் மரபு மாதா பிதா குரு தெய்வம் வரப்பிரசாதம் போல் வந்தது வளர்த்திட வேண்டும் நாம் இதை மூதாதையர் தந்த செல்வம் மூச்சில் கலந்த மரபு ஓதிய மந்திரம் போல் ஊறி உள்ளம் நிறைந்தது பழமை என்று இகழாதே பண்டையோர் அறிவு பெரிது புதுமை கலந்தால் சிறக்கும் புராதன மரபு மேலும் திருவிழா கோயில் கூத்து திருமணம் சடங்கு முறைகள் பெரியோர் சொன்ன நெறிகள் பேணி நடப்போம் நாமும் மரபை மதித்து வாழ்வோம் மாற்றம் தேவை என்றால் செய்வோம் அரிய செல்வம் இழவாமல் அடுத்த தலைமுறைக்குத் தருவோம்

English Translation
Tradition, tradition, our tradition Mother, father, teacher, God It came like a divine blessing We must nurture it The treasure our ancestors gave Tradition mixed in our breath Like chanted mantras It seeped and filled the heart Do not despise it as old The knowledge of ancients is great If mixed with newness it will excel The ancient tradition even more Festivals, temple arts Marriage ceremonies and rituals The principles elders spoke We too shall follow and cherish We shall live honoring tradition If change is needed we shall make it Without losing rare treasures We shall give to the next generation
Historical Context
This thoughtful poem, written around 1911-1916, shows Bharathiyar's nuanced view of tradition. While he was a reformer who challenged regressive customs, he deeply respected the wisdom of "மூதாதையர்" (ancestors). The opening line "மாதா பிதா குரு தெய்வம்" (Mother, Father, Teacher, God) reflects traditional Indian values of respect. Importantly, he advocates for balance: "புதுமை கலந்தால் சிறக்கும்" (if mixed with newness it will excel). This progressive conservatism - keeping what is valuable while reforming what needs change - was central to Bharathiyar's philosophy.
