நடனம் நடனம் தெய்வ நடனம் நடராஜன் ஆடும் நடனம் உடலும் உயிரும் ஒன்றாகும் உலகே மயங்கும் நடனத்திலே அடி வைத்தால் பூமி அதிரும் அசைவில் அழகு பிறக்கும் கடி வளை ஒலிக்கும் சலங்கை கால்களில் இசை பிறக்கும் சிவன் ஆடும் தாண்டவமே சிருஷ்டியின் ஆதாரம் காண் அவன் ஆடும் போது உலகம் அனைத்தும் இயங்கும் அழகுடனே பரதநாட்டியம் பழம் கலை பாரதத்தின் பெருமையடா விரதத்தில் கற்றால் உயர்வு வரும் விண்ணோர் வியப்பர் உன் ஆட்டம் நடனமே தவம் என்று கொள் நாளும் பயிற்சி செய்திடு உடலில் ஒளி பாய்ந்திடும் ஊக்கமும் இன்பமும் நிறைந்திடும்

Dance, dance, divine dance The dance that Nataraja performs Body and soul become one The world is enchanted by dance When a foot is placed, the earth trembles Beauty is born in movement Ankle bells ring, the salangai Music is born at the feet The Tandava that Shiva dances See, it is the foundation of creation When He dances, the world All of it moves with beauty Bharatanatyam is an ancient art It is the pride of Bharata (India) If learned with dedication, greatness comes The celestials will marvel at your dance Consider dance as penance Practice daily Light will flow through the body Enthusiasm and joy will fill you
Historical Context
This poem celebrates Bharatanatyam and the cosmic dance of Nataraja (நடராஜன்), Lord Shiva as the cosmic dancer. Written around 1912-1916, Bharathiyar was deeply influenced by the concept of Shiva's Tandava (தாண்டவம்) - the dance of creation and destruction. The poem references சலங்கை (ankle bells), essential to classical dance. During Bharathiyar's time, classical dance was being revived after colonial suppression. His elevation of dance as divine worship (தவம் - penance) helped restore its sacred status. This poem is still recited at Bharatanatyam arangetrams (debut performances).
