பெண்களுக்கு நான் சொல்வேன் - கேளீர் பெரிய வார்த்தை ஒன்று சொல்வேன் மண்ணில் உமக்கு நிகர் இல்லை - நீங்கள் மனித குலத்தின் தாய்மார்களே கல்வி கற்றிடுவீர் பெண்களே - நல்ல கவிதை எழுதிடுவீர் பெண்களே செல்வம் சேர்த்திடுவீர் பெண்களே - உங்கள் சிந்தனை வளர்த்திடுவீர் பெண்களே அடிமை என்ற சொல்லை மறந்திடுவீர் - என்றும் அச்சம் என்பதை துறந்திடுவீர் குடிமை உரிமைகள் பெறுங்களே - உயர் கொள்கையில் நிலைத்திடுங்களே ஆண் என்றும் பெண் என்றும் வேறில்லை - இந்த அறிவை மனதில் பதித்திடுவீர் வான் அளவு உயர்ந்திடுவீர் பெண்களே - நாடு வாழ உதவிடுவீர் பெண்களே வீட்டுக்குள் இருக்க வேண்டாம் - வெளி உலகில் பணி செய்திடுங்களே காட்டுக்குப் போன பெண்மணியை நினைவீர் - அவள் கற்பனை வீரத்தைப் பாடுங்களே பெண்ணடிமை தீர்ந்திடும் நாள் வரும் - அந்த பெரு நாள் வெகு சீக்கிரம் வரும் மண்ணடிமை போனது போல் - இந்த மடமை ஒழிந்திடும் காண்பீரே

English Translation
To women I shall speak - listen I shall speak one great word On earth there is none equal to you - you are The mothers of humankind Get educated, O women - write Good poetry, O women Accumulate wealth, O women - develop Your thinking, O women Forget the word "slave" forever - abandon What is called fear Obtain your citizenship rights - stand firm In noble principles There is no difference as male or female - imprint This knowledge in your minds Rise to the heights of the sky, O women - help The nation to prosper, O women Don't stay confined within the home - go work In the outside world Remember the woman who went to the forest - sing Of her imaginative courage The day when women's slavery ends will come - that Great day will come very soon Just as slavery of the land ended - this Foolishness too shall vanish, you will see
Historical Context
This revolutionary poem, written around 1913-1916, is one of the earliest and most powerful calls for women's emancipation in Indian literature. Bharathiyar was far ahead of his time, advocating women's education, economic independence, political rights, and freedom from domestic confinement. The reference to "the woman who went to the forest" likely refers to heroic women from epics like Sita or historical figures who showed courage. The comparison of women's subjugation to colonial slavery was particularly powerful in his political context. Bharathiyar practiced what he preached - his wife Chellamma was educated and his poems about his daughter Shakuntala showed his belief in girls' potential. This poem influenced the Self-Respect Movement and remains an anthem for women's rights.
