தொழிலாளி எழுகிறான் விடியலிலே தொண்டனாய் நாட்டை வளர்க்கிறான் அழிவில்லா ஊக்கம் கொண்டு அயராது உழைத்திடுவான் இரும்பை உருக்கிடுவான் இயந்திரம் ஓட்டிடுவான் கரும்பாய் உழைத்திடுவான் கட்டிடம் கட்டிடுவான் வியர்வை சிந்தும் உழைப்பு வீரமிகு செயலது உயர்வே உழைப்பின் பலன் உண்மை இது கேளடா சமூகம் இயங்குவது சரியான உழைப்பினால் தமிழ்நாட்டின் செல்வமது தொழிலாளர் உழைப்பினால் தொழிலாளி வாழ்க என்று சொல்லிடு நீயும் தினம் அழியாத புகழ் அவர்க்கு ஆர்வமாய் போற்றிடுவோம்

English Translation
The worker rises at dawn As a servant he develops the nation With indestructible enthusiasm He works tirelessly He melts the iron He runs the machines He works like sugarcane (sweetly and hard) He builds the buildings Labor that sheds sweat Is an act of great valor Elevation is the fruit of work This is the truth, listen Society functions Because of proper labor Tamil Nadu's wealth Is due to workers' labor Say "Long live the worker" Every day yourself Eternal glory to them Let us praise them with enthusiasm
Historical Context
Written around 1912-1916, this poem reflects Bharathiyar's socialist leanings and his exposure to labor movements during his time in Puducherry. The industrialization of India brought new working classes whom Bharathiyar championed against exploitation. The poem echoes Karl Marx's ideas about labor creating value, filtered through Tamil sensibilities. The phrase "வியர்வை சிந்தும் உழைப்பு" (sweat-shedding labor) dignifies physical work. This poem is recited in labor union gatherings and May Day celebrations in Tamil Nadu, connecting workers to their literary heritage.
