பொறுமை பொறுமை மிகு பொறுமை பூமியின் குணமே பொறுமை நிறுத்தி நில் ஒரு கணம் நிதானமே வெற்றியின் வழி பூமி எல்லாம் சுமக்கிறது புகார் ஒன்றும் சொல்வதில்லை ஆமை போல் பொறுத்திருப்பாய் ஆத்திரம் விட்டொழி நீயும் மரம் வெட்டுவோன் தலையிலும் மறவாமல் நிழல் தரும் அரம் போல் பொறுமை கொள் அவமானம் பொறுத்திடு கோபம் வந்தால் நிறுத்து கொஞ்சம் பொறுத்திரு தாபம் மறைந்திடும் காண் தவறு புரிந்திடும் பின்னர் பொறுமை என்னும் ஆயுதம் பொன்னிலும் விலை மதிப்பு நறுமணம் போல் வாழ்வில் நலமே தரும் பொறுமை

English Translation
Patience, patience, great patience Patience is the nature of the earth Stop and stand for a moment Calmness is the path to victory The earth carries everything It does not complain at all Be patient like a tortoise Abandon your rage, you too Even on the head of one who cuts it The tree unforgettingly gives shade Be patient like a file (that smooths rough things) Endure insults When anger comes, stop Be patient for a while See, the heat will disappear Mistakes will be understood later The weapon called patience Is more valuable than gold Like fragrance in life Patience gives only goodness
Historical Context
This wisdom poem on patience (பொறுமை) draws from Tamil ethical literature, especially Thirukkural. Written around 1913-1916, it reflects Bharathiyar's personal experience of enduring hardships - poverty, exile, and criticism. The metaphors are powerful: earth that silently carries all burdens, the tree that gives shade even to one who cuts it (a classic Indian example of forbearance), and the tortoise (ஆமை) known for patient persistence. The Thirukkural states "பொறுத்தார் பூமி ஆள்வர்" (Those who are patient will rule the earth), and this poem expands on that wisdom.
