Historical Context
Bharathiyar wrote this "New Aathichudi" around 1915 as a modern version of Avvaiyar's classical Aathichudi. While the original 12th century text taught traditional morality to children, Bharathiyar infused his version with revolutionary ideas for his time. Notable is "Aangilam padi" (learn English) - radical for a nationalist as he recognized the need for modern education while fighting colonialism. "Saadhi mara" (forget caste) directly attacked the caste system. The alphabetical format (each line starting with a successive Tamil letter) follows the traditional structure but with completely new, progressive content. This work bridges classical Tamil poetic tradition with modern reformist thought.
