புதுமை புதுமை வேண்டும் புவியில் நாளும் புதுமை வேண்டும் பழமை மட்டும் போதாது பாருக்கு புதுமை வேண்டும் மூடப்பழக்கம் விட்டொழி முன்னேறும் எண்ணம் கொள் கூடிய விரைவில் கற்றிடு கொள்கையை மாற்றிக் கொள் பெண்களும் படிக்க வேண்டும் பேதமை தீர்ந்திட வேண்டும் கண்களைத் திறந்து பார் காலத்தின் மாற்றம் புரி சாதி ஜாதி வேண்டாம் சமத்துவம் வேண்டும் எங்கும் நீதி நிலைக்க வேண்டும் நேர்மையே ஆட்சி செய்யும் புதுமை என்பது பயமில்லை புரட்சி என்பது தீமையில்லை நடுமை கொண்ட புதுமை வரும் நாளை நமதே என்று கொள்

English Translation
Modernity, modernity is needed Modernity is needed daily on earth Oldness alone is not enough The world needs modernity Abandon superstitious habits Have progressive thoughts Learn as quickly as possible Change your principles Women too must study Discrimination must end Open your eyes and see Understand the changes of time No caste, no caste distinctions Equality is needed everywhere Justice must prevail Honesty shall rule Modernity is not fear Revolution is not evil Modernity with balance will come Know that tomorrow is ours
Historical Context
This revolutionary poem, written around 1908-1916, captures Bharathiyar's progressive agenda. He directly attacks caste discrimination ("சாதி ஜாதி வேண்டாம்") and advocates for women's education ("பெண்களும் படிக்க வேண்டும்"). The call to abandon superstition ("மூடப்பழக்கம்") was radical for his time. Bharathiyar balanced his respect for tradition with a fierce commitment to social reform. The final stanza reassures that modernity and revolution are not threats but paths to a better future. This poem is often cited in discussions of Tamil progressive thought.
