சமத்துவம் வேண்டும் உலகில் சாதனை அது எங்கள் இலக்கு அமைதியாய் வாழ வேண்டும் அனைவரும் சமமாய் வாழ்வில் ஏழையும் செல்வனும் சமம் ஏற்றத்தாழ்வு இங்கு இல்லை வாழையும் தென்னையும் போல் வளர்ந்திடு நீயும் நானும் பெண்ணும் ஆணும் சமம் என்று பேசிடு உரக்கமாய் கண்ணும் கருத்தும் ஒன்றே காப்போம் சமத்துவத்தை மேலும் கீழும் இல்லை மேன்மை குணத்தில் உண்டு சால ஒருவன் உயர்ந்தால் சாதனையால் உயர்ந்தான் பிறப்பால் உயர்வு இல்லை பெருமதிப்பு செயலால் திறமையும் முயற்சியும் உண்டு திருந்திய சமுதாயம் வா

English Translation
We need equality in the world That achievement is our goal We must live peacefully Everyone equal in life Poor and rich are equal There is no high and low here Like banana and coconut trees You and I will grow Say loudly that Woman and man are equal Vision and thought are one Let us protect equality There is no above or below Excellence is in character If someone has risen high They rose through achievement There is no elevation by birth Great respect comes through action There is talent and effort Come, reformed society
Historical Context
This revolutionary poem, written around 1910-1918, challenges India's hierarchical social structure. Bharathiyar boldly declared "பெண்ணும் ஆணும் சமம்" (women and men are equal) at a time when women's rights were rarely discussed. His rejection of birth-based hierarchy ("பிறப்பால் உயர்வு இல்லை") was radical for colonial India. The imagery of banana and coconut trees growing side by side represents harmony in diversity. This poem influenced later social reform movements and is still quoted in discussions about social justice in Tamil Nadu.
