செல்வம் என்பது என்ன சொல்வீர்? செம்பொன்னும் வெள்ளியும் செல்வமோ? கல்வியும் கேள்வியும் செல்வமே கருணையும் அன்பும் செல்வமே நல்லறிவு கொண்டவன் செல்வனே நாணமும் பண்பும் செல்வமே சொல்லிய சொல்லைக் காப்பவன் சொர்க்கமே அவன் வீடு காண் மனிதனின் உள்ளத்துள் உறையும் மாசற்ற நேர்மையே செல்வமாம் இனிமையாய் பேசுதல் செல்வமே ஈகையும் தியாகமும் செல்வமே பொன்னிலும் மணியிலும் செல்வமில்லை பொறுமையே மாபெரும் செல்வமாம் என்னிலும் பிறர்க்கென வாழுதல் இப்புவி தனில் மிகு செல்வமே

English Translation
What do you call wealth, tell me? Are gold and silver truly wealth? Learning and listening are true wealth Compassion and love are true wealth One with good wisdom is wealthy Modesty and character are wealth One who keeps their word given Heaven itself is their abode, see The spotless honesty that dwells Within the human heart is wealth Speaking sweetly is wealth Charity and sacrifice are wealth There is no wealth in gold or gems Patience is the greatest wealth Living for others more than oneself That is the greatest wealth on this earth
Historical Context
This philosophical poem reflects Bharathiyar's deep understanding of Thirukkural and classical Tamil ethical literature. Written around 1910-1915, it challenges materialistic notions of wealth prevalent during colonial times. The poem draws from the Thirukkural tradition where Thiruvalluvar spoke extensively about virtues being true wealth. Bharathiyar emphasizes that education (கல்வி), character (பண்பு), patience (பொறுமை), and selfless living are the real treasures.
