சுதந்திரப் பறவைகள் நாமடா - எந்தத் துன்பமும் நம்மை அணுகாதடா பதம் பார்த்து நடப்பது வெறுமையடா - உயர் பறந்து திரிவது சுகமடா வானத்தில் பறக்கின்ற பருந்தடா - அந்த வான் பருந்தின் நிலை கண்டாயா தானம் வேண்டி அலைவதில்லை - உயர் சாதனை செய்ய பிறந்தோமடா கூண்டினிலே அடைபட்ட கிளியைப் போல் - இனிக் கூவி அழுவது நமக்கேனடா வேண்டும் சுதந்திரம் என்பதை மறவாதே - நெஞ்சில் வீரத்தை வளர்த்திடு தமிழா சிறகடித்து எழுந்திடு வானிலே - நீ சிந்தனை செய்யடா மானிலே பிறப்பினில் அடிமை இல்லையடா - உன் பெருமையை உலகுக்கு காட்டடா சுதந்திரப் பறவைகள் நாமடா - என்றும் சூரியன் காணும் வரையிலடா இதந்தரும் சுகங்களை நுகர்வோமடா - இந்த இன்பத்தை எண்ணி மகிழ்வோமடா

Suthanthirap paravaikal naamadaa - endha Thunbamum nammai anugaathadaa Padham paarthu nadappadhu verumaiyada - uyar Parandhu thirivadhu sugamadaa Vaanaththil parakkinra parundhadaa - andha Vaan parundin nilai kandaayaa Thaanam vendi alaivathillai - uyar Saadhanai seyya pirandhomadaa Koondinil adaipatta kiliyai pol - inik Koovi azhuvadhu namakkaenadaa Vendum suthanthiram enbadhai maravaadhae - nenjil Veeraththai valarthidu thamizhaa Siragadiththu ezhundhidu vaanilae - nee Sindhanai seyyada maanilae Pirappil adimai illaiyada - un Perumaiyai ulagukku kaattadaa Suthanthirap paravaikal naamadaa - endrum Sooriyan kaanum varaiyiladaa Idhandharum sugangalai nugarvomdaa - indha Inbaththai enni magizhvomadaa
English Translation
We are birds of freedom - no Sorrow shall ever approach us Walking carefully is mere emptiness - soaring High and roaming freely is true joy See the eagle flying in the sky - have you Observed the state of that sky-eagle? It does not wander begging for alms - we were Born to achieve great accomplishments Like a parrot trapped in a cage - why should We cry out and weep anymore? Never forget that freedom is needed - Tamil people Nurture courage in your hearts Flap your wings and rise into the sky - think Deeply about honor and dignity There is no slavery by birth - show Your greatness to the world We are birds of freedom - as long as The sun shines upon us Let us enjoy the comforts that please - let us Rejoice thinking of this happiness

Composed during the peak of the independence movement around 1908-1912, this poem uses the powerful metaphor of a free-flying bird versus a caged parrot to represent the choice between freedom and servitude.
