தமிழ்நாடு என்றொரு நாடு உண்டு தரணியில் அதற்கு நிகர் இல்லை அமிழ்தினும் இனிய மொழி உண்டு அதன் பெயர் தமிழ் என்று சொல்வார் செந்தமிழ் பேசும் மக்கள் உண்டு செம்மையும் நேர்மையும் கொண்டவர் வந்தவர் அனைவரும் வியப்புறும் வளமான நாடு எங்கள் நாடு கோவில்கள் ஆயிரம் கொண்ட நாடு கோபுரம் வானை முட்டுமே பாவலர் தோன்றிய புண்ணிய நாடு பாரினில் புகழ் மிகும் நாடு கடலோரம் நீண்டு கிடக்கும் நாடு காவேரி பாயும் வளநாடு குடகு மலை தொடங்கி நிலமெல்லாம் குலவும் செழிப்பான நாடிது தமிழ்நாடு வாழ்க என்று சொல்வோம் தமிழர்கள் வாழ்க என்று பாடுவோம் அமிழ்தமிழ் வளர்க என்று ஆர்ப்போம் ஆண்டவன் அருள் பெற்று வாழ்வோமே

English Translation
There is a land called Tamil Nadu There is no equal to it on this earth There is a language sweeter than nectar Its name, they say, is Tamil There are people who speak pure Tamil They possess excellence and honesty All who come marvel at it Our land is a prosperous land A land with a thousand temples Whose towers touch the sky A sacred land where poets were born A land famous in all the world A land stretching along the seashore A fertile land where Kaveri flows From Coorg mountains across all lands This is a flourishing prosperous land Let us say "Long live Tamil Nadu" Let us sing "Long live Tamilians" Let us cheer "May nectarine Tamil flourish" May we live with the Lord's blessings
Historical Context
This poem is Bharathiyar's love letter to his homeland. Written during the early 1900s, it reflects the awakening of regional and linguistic pride during the nationalist movement. Bharathiyar saw no contradiction between Tamil pride and Indian nationalism - both were aspects of cultural awakening. The poem mentions key geographical features: the coastline (கடலோரம்), the Kaveri river (காவேரி), the Western Ghats (குடகு மலை). The reference to temple towers (கோபுரம்) celebrates Tamil architectural heritage. This poem is still recited at Tamil cultural events and functions, embodying the eternal love for தமிழ்நாடு.
