தனி ஒருவனுக்கு உணவில்லை எனில் ஜகத்தினை அழித்திடுவோம் தனி ஒருவனுக்கு உணவில்லை எனில் ஜகத்தினை அழித்திடுவோம் உலகனைத்தும் ஒன்றாகக் காண்போம் உயர்ந்ததும் தாழ்ந்ததும் இல்லை பலவினத்தார் என்று பகை கொள்வதும் இல்லை பாரினில் யாவரும் சமம் தனி ஒருவன் வயிறு குறைந்தால் தலைக்கேறி வரும் கோபம் இனியோர் பசியை நாம் பார்த்திருக்க வில்லை எல்லோரும் ஓர் குலம் பண்ணை நிலத்தினில் உழைப்பவன் பசியோடு இருக்கக் கூடாது எண்ணற்ற செல்வம் இருப்போரும் ஏழைகளை மறக்கக் கூடாது தனி ஒருவனுக்கு உணவில்லை எனில் ஜகத்தினை அழித்திடுவோம்

English Translation
If even one person is without food We shall destroy this world If even one person is without food We shall destroy this world We see the entire world as one There is no high or low We do not hold enmity against different races In this world, everyone is equal If one person's stomach is empty Anger rises to the head We will not stand watching others starve Everyone is of one community The one who toils in the field Should not remain hungry Those with endless wealth Should not forget the poor If even one person is without food We shall destroy this world
Historical Context
This fiery poem represents Bharathiyar at his most revolutionary. Written around 1917-1919, during a period when famines affected large parts of India due to British policies diverting food to WWI efforts, this poem was considered dangerously subversive. The opening line became a rallying cry for social reformers and labor movements. Bharathiyar's message was radical for his time - he declared that no society can justify its existence if even one member goes hungry. This poem influenced later social movements in Tamil Nadu and India. The concept of "destroying the world" (jagaththinai azhiththiduvom) refers to dismantling unjust social structures, not physical destruction.
