தியாகம் என்பது தெய்வமே திருமகள் வாழும் குணமது தயாளம் கொண்ட நெஞ்சில் தங்கிடும் செல்வமது தன்னை மறந்து பிறர்க்காய் தருவது தியாகமாம் என்னை விட்டு நாட்டுக்காய் ஈவது உயர் தியாகம் தியாகிகள் வாழ்ந்த நாடு திருமலி செய்திடும் வியாதி இல்லா வாழ்வு வரும் வெற்றி மேல் வெற்றி வரும் ஒரு துளி இரத்தம் சிந்தி உயிரையும் தந்திடுவான் பெரு நாட்டின் விடுதலைக்கு பெரியோர் வழி காட்டினார் தியாகத்தின் வழி நடப்போம் தினமும் சிறிது தருவோம் மாயாத புகழ் பெறுவோம் மாந்தர்க்கு உதவி செய்வோம்

Thiyaagam enbadhu theyvamey Thirumagal vaazhum kunam adhu Thayaalam konda nenjil Thangkidum selvam adhu Thannai marandhu pirarkkaay Tharuvadhu thiyaagamaam Ennai vittu naattukkaay Eevadhu uyar thiyaagam Thiyaagigal vaazhndha naadu Thirumali seydidum Viyaadhi illaa vaazhvu varum Vetri mel vetri varum Oru thuli iraththam sindhi Uyiraiyum thandhiduvaan Peru naattin vidudhalaiku Periyoar vazhi kaattinaar Thiyaagaththin vazhi nadappom Dhinamum siridhu tharuvom Maayaadha pugazh peruvom Maandharku udhavi seyvom
English Translation
Sacrifice is divine itself It is a quality where Lakshmi dwells In a heart with compassion That wealth stays Forgetting oneself, giving for others That is sacrifice Giving up myself for the nation That is the highest sacrifice A country where sacrificers lived Will flourish with prosperity A life without disease will come Victory upon victory will come Shedding even a drop of blood He will give his very life For the liberation of the great nation The great ones showed the way Let us walk the path of sacrifice Let us give a little each day Let us gain undying fame Let us help fellow humans
Historical Context
Written during the freedom movement around 1908-1918, this poem honors the spirit of sacrifice that Bharathiyar witnessed in freedom fighters. He himself lived a life of sacrifice - giving up material comfort for his ideals. The reference to shedding blood for the nation echoes the sacrifices of revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh (though written earlier). The connection of sacrifice to Lakshmi (திருமகள்) suggests that true prosperity comes through selfless giving, not hoarding.
