உழவன் உழுகிறான் நிலத்தை உலகுக்கு உணவு தருகிறான் பழகிய கலப்பை ஏந்தி பாரெல்லாம் நடந்திடுவான் விதை தூவி வயலில் நின்று வியர்வையில் குளித்திடுவான் மதி போல் ஒளிரும் முகத்தோடு மண்ணை அன்பாய்ப் பார்ப்பான் மழை வரும் என்று காத்து மனம் துடிக்க நிற்பான் இழை இழையாய் உழைத்து இன்பமாய் வாழ்ந்திடுவான் உழவனின் கையில் உலகம் உண்மை இது கேளடா பழிக்காதே அவன் தொழிலை பாரினில் உயர்ந்தது காண் உழவுக்கும் தொழிலுக்கும் வந்தனை உயர்ந்தவர் அவர்களே உலகில் அழகிய இந்நாட்டின் செல்வம் அன்னதாதா உழவனே

English Translation
The farmer ploughs the land He gives food to the world Holding the familiar plough He walks across all lands Sowing seeds, standing in the field He bathes in his own sweat With a face glowing like the moon He looks at the soil with love Waiting for the rain to come He stands with a trembling heart Working thread by thread He lives happily The world is in the farmer's hands This is the truth, listen Do not despise his profession See, it is the noblest on earth Salutations to farming and labor They are the noblest in the world The wealth of this beautiful nation Is the farmer, the food-giver
Historical Context
This poem celebrates the உழவன் (farmer) - a figure deeply revered in Tamil culture. Bharathiyar wrote this around 1912-1916 when agriculture was the backbone of Indian economy. The term "அன்னதாதா" (anna-daata, food-giver) elevates farmers to divine status. This resonates with the Thirukkural couplet "உழுதுண்டு வாழ்வாரே வாழ்வார்" (Only those who live by ploughing truly live). Bharathiyar's progressive view challenged caste-based discrimination against agricultural workers. The poem remains relevant today as farming faces modern challenges while feeding billions.
