வீரம் என்றால் என்ன என்று கேட்பாய் வீழ்ந்தாலும் எழும் மனம் என்பேன் தீரமாக நின்று போர் செய்யும் திடமான நெஞ்சம் என்பேன் வீரர்கள் பிறக்கும் நாடு இது வேந்தர்கள் வாழ்ந்த பூமி இது பாரத வீரர் வரலாறு படித்திட பெருமை கொள்வோம் சிங்கம் போல் நடை நடப்போம் சிறுமை எண்ணம் விட்டொழிப்போம் தங்கத் தமிழர் நாமே என்று தலைநிமிர்ந்து வாழ்வோம் அஞ்சாமை என்பது வீரம் அடிமைத் தனம் தீர்ப்பது வீரம் துஞ்சாமல் உழைப்பது வீரம் தூய்மையாய் வாழ்வது வீரம் வாழ்க வீரம் வாழ்க தீரம் வளர்க நம் தமிழினம் ஆழ்கடல் அலை போலே ஆர்ப்பரித்து எழுவோம்

English Translation
If you ask what is valor, I will say It is a mind that rises even when fallen Fighting bravely while standing firm I would call it a steadfast heart This is a land where heroes are born This is a soil where kings lived The history of Indian heroes Let us read and take pride Let us walk like lions Let us discard petty thoughts Saying we are golden Tamils Let us live with heads held high Fearlessness is valor Ending slavery is valor Working without rest is valor Living purely is valor Long live valor, long live courage May our Tamil race flourish Like the waves of the deep ocean Let us rise roaring

This stirring poem, written around 1908-1912, encapsulates Bharathiyar's philosophy of valor (வீரம்). For him, true heroism was not just physical courage but moral and spiritual strength.
