Nallāṟṟā lallalaip paṭuvatu oṉṟu

Kāṟṟiṉ kayavārāl kallāṉ kaṭai

English translation

One thing suffers misfortune by good deeds; the ignorant end suffers by association with the base.

Listen

Explanation

Sometimes even good deeds lead to trouble (one rare case), but associating with base people always leads the ignorant to ruin (this is certain).

Story behind this kural

In a peaceful village lived a kind farmer named Arul. He was known for his generosity, always helping others. One year, a severe drought struck. Arul, despite his own dwindling resources, shared his grain with his neighbors. Among them was a wealthy but greedy merchant, Karunan. Karunan, seeing Arul's dwindling supplies, offered to store his remaining grain, promising a fair return after the rains. Arul, trusting Karunan's wealth, agreed. When the rains finally came, Karunan refused to return the grain, claiming it was lost. Arul, left with nothing, faced ruin. Meanwhile, a wandering sage, observing the events, sought shelter with a humble potter. The potter, though poor, offered the sage his meager food and warm hospitality. The sage, in turn, shared his wisdom, and the potter's life flourished.
