வேண்டின்உண் டாகத் துறக்க
துறந்தபின் ஈண்டுஇயற் பால பல
Vēṇṭiṉuṇ ṭākat tuṟakka
Tuṟantapiṉ īṇṭuiyaṟ pāla pala
English translation
Renounce while you still have possessions; after renunciation, many natural benefits will come.

Don't wait until you have nothing left to renounce - that would not be true renunciation. Give up attachments while you still have them, and spiritual benefits will naturally follow.

Story behind this kural

One year, a fierce storm ravaged the village, destroying crops and homes. Arun's walls offered little protection; the storm shattered his granary, and his wealth was lost. Bala, though his fields suffered, found his neighbors eager to help. They shared what little they had, and together, they rebuilt. Arun, humbled and alone, watched as Bala's spirit and generosity flourished. He realized that true wealth lay not in what one possessed, but in what one was willing to let go.
