Listen

Explanation

This opening kural sets the chapter's tone: never give up because something seems hard. The word அசாவாமை means "not despairing" or "not giving up." Difficulty (அருமை) should not lead to discouragement. Consistent effort (முயற்சி) ultimately leads to greatness (பெருமை). This is timeless advice for students facing challenging subjects!

Story behind this kural

In a village nestled beside a vast mountain, lived a young farmer named Arul. He dreamed of cultivating the highest peak, believing the soil there held the secret to the sweetest mangoes. Many villagers scoffed, declaring the climb too treacherous and the land too barren. Arul, however, refused to be discouraged. Each morning, he began his ascent. The path was steep, the air thin, and the sun fierce. He stumbled, he sweated, and sometimes, he despaired. Yet, remembering his dream, he persisted. He cleared rocks, watered the dry earth with buckets carried from the stream below, and planted tiny saplings. Years passed. Other villagers forgot his efforts, but Arul remained steadfast. Finally, the day arrived when his mango trees, laden with golden fruit, stood against the sky. The mangoes were unlike any seen before, bursting with a flavor that was both sweet and profound. Arul shared his bounty, and the villagers marveled at the sweetness born of his unwavering spirit.
