Araciṉ arukaṉil eytaṟatāṟ
Ṟaṉ āṇṭoḻukiṉal pōlum irukkaik keṭum
English translation
The position gained by reaching the king's side will be lost if one does not conduct oneself appropriately.
Listen
Explanation
Gaining position near the king (அரசின் அருகு எய்தல்) is one thing; keeping it requires proper conduct (ஆண்டு ஒழுகினல்). Without appropriate behavior, even high position (இருக்கை) will be lost (கெடும்).

Story behind this kural
In a bustling kingdom lived a clever merchant named Thiru. Through shrewd deals, he caught the king’s eye and was appointed Royal Advisor. Thiru reveled in his newfound status. He built a grand house, wore the finest silks, and feasted daily. However, Thiru soon forgot the humility that brought him success. He began to boast, disregard the opinions of others, and speak disrespectfully, even to the King. He believed his position was secure, forgetting the qualities that initially earned him favor. One day, a neighboring kingdom sent a delegation, seeking trade agreements. Thiru, in his arrogance, insulted their leader, causing a diplomatic crisis. The King, though fond of Thiru, saw the damage. He gently removed Thiru from his advisory role, replacing him with a more prudent man. Thiru was left with his grand house and fine clothes, but without the respect and influence he once held.
