நிறைநீர நீரவர் கேண்மை
பிறைமதிப் பின்னீர பேதையார் நட்பு
Niṟainīra nīravar kēṇmai
Piṟaimatip piṉṉīra pētaiyār naṭpu
English translation
The friendship of the wise is like the waxing moon; the friendship of fools is like the waning moon.

Story behind this kural
In a village nestled beside a whispering river, lived two farmers, Arun and Bala. Arun, wise and kind, always offered help and sound advice. Bala, however, was known for his fleeting interests and fickle nature. When the harvest was bountiful, Arun and Bala rejoiced together, their friendship flourishing. As the moon waxed full, their shared joy seemed to grow with it. But when a harsh drought struck, Bala quickly lost heart. He grumbled and complained, his friendship with Arun dwindling like the moon's diminishing light. He sought new companions, promising them the world, only to abandon them when hardship came. Arun, however, remained steadfast. He shared his meager water supply and offered words of encouragement. His friendship with those around him, like the waxing moon, grew stronger in the face of adversity, offering a gentle, enduring light even in the darkest times.
