பெரியாரைப் பேணாது ஒழுகின்
பெரியாரால் பேரா இடும்பை தரும்
Periyāraip pēṇātu oḻukiṉ
Periyārāl pērā iṭumpai tarum
English translation
If one behaves without cherishing the great, the great will bring unending sorrow.

Explanation
Failing to respect and honor the great (பெரியார்) results in perpetual suffering. Their displeasure brings troubles that never cease (பேரா இடும்பை - immovable sorrow).

Story behind this kural
In a humble village nestled beside a whispering forest, lived a woodcutter named Arul. He was known for his strength but lacked respect for anyone. One day, a wise old sage, revered throughout the land, came to Arul seeking shelter from the evening rain. Arul, however, scoffed at the sage’s request, deeming him a burden. The next morning, as Arul ventured into the forest, his axe slipped, severing his own leg. Unable to walk, he cried for help. Villagers, remembering his disrespect for the sage, turned a blind eye. Days turned into weeks, and Arul, alone and injured, suffered greatly. He eventually learned that the sage, with his gentle nature and vast knowledge, could have aided him. He saw his folly, wishing he had welcomed the wise man instead of turning him away. Only then did the villagers help him.
