நட்டார் குறைமுடியார் நன்றாற்றார்
நானும் உஞற்றார் பெண்வழிச் செல்வார்
Naṭṭār kuṟaimuṭiyār naṉṟāṟṟār
Nāṉum uñaṟṟār peṇvaḻic celvār
English translation
Those who submit to their wives will not help friends, do good, take initiative, or feel proper shame.

Story behind this kural
In a village nestled beside a whispering river, lived a farmer named Arul. Arul was known for his bountiful harvests, but lately, his fields lay barren. His wife, Selvi, a woman of strong will, had forbidden him from helping his neighbor, Kumar, whose crops were failing. One day, the village elder requested Arul’s help to repair the crumbling well. Selvi scoffed, declaring it a waste of time. Arul, though troubled by the village's plight, obeyed. The well remained broken, and the villagers struggled. Later, a travelling merchant offered Arul a chance to trade his grain for valuable goods. Selvi, however, disliked the merchant's appearance and forbade the deal. Arul, again, complied. His family remained poor. As the seasons turned, Arul's farm withered, his friendships frayed, and his spirit dimmed. He had all but forgotten the joy of a good harvest, the warmth of friendship, or the satisfaction of a deed well done.
