English translation
Nothing brings poverty like gambling, which causes many disgraces and destroys reputation.
Listen
Explanation
Gambling brings சிறுமை (disgrace), destroys சீர் (reputation), and ensures வறுமை (poverty). Thiruvalluvar says nothing else causes poverty as certainly as gambling.

Story behind this kural
In a small village nestled beside a shimmering river, lived a carpenter named Arul. Arul was known for his skilled hands and honest work. He crafted beautiful furniture and always charged a fair price, ensuring his family's comfort. One day, a traveling merchant introduced a game of chance to the villagers. Arul, initially hesitant, was drawn in by the promise of quick riches. At first, he won small amounts, and his excitement grew. He started neglecting his work, spending his days at the game. Soon, his winnings vanished, replaced by losses. He began selling his tools, then his furniture, to continue playing. The villagers, once admiring, now whispered behind their hands. His house, once filled with warmth, became cold. His children went hungry. Arul, once respected, was now a shadow of his former self, consumed by the relentless pursuit of what he could no longer obtain.
