English translation

If one takes to gambling, five things will never be attained: clothes, wealth, food, fame, and learning.

Listen

Explanation

Gambling prevents attainment of five essentials: உடை (clothing), செல்வம் (wealth), ஊண் (food), ஒளி (fame/brightness), and கல்வி (learning). Total deprivation results.

Story behind this kural

In a village nestled beside a whispering river, lived a farmer named Arul. He owned a small plot of land and a humble home. Each harvest, he'd sell his crops, providing for his family and saving a little for the future. One day, a traveling merchant introduced the villagers to a game of chance. Arul, tempted by the promise of easy riches, began to gamble. At first, he won small amounts. But the wins only fueled his desire for more. He sold his tools, then his livestock, wagering everything on the turn of a card. Soon, his clothes were tattered, and his family went hungry. His neighbors, once friendly, now avoided him. He had no time for his children or learning new skills. His once bright spirit dimmed with each lost bet. Finally, left with nothing, Arul understood the true cost of his folly.
