Iḻivaṟintu uṇpāṉkaṇ iṉpampōl
Niṟkum kaḻipēr iraiyāṉkaṇ nōy
English translation
Just as pleasure resides in one who eats with discrimination, disease resides in the glutton.
Listen
Explanation
A balanced comparison: இன்பம் (pleasure/health) stays with the moderate eater (இழிவு அறிந்து உண்பான்), while நோய் (disease) stays with the glutton (கழிபேர் இரையான் - one who eats excessively).

Story behind this kural
In the village of Eldoria, lived two farmers: Thomas and Silas. Thomas was known for his careful tending of his crops and equally mindful meals. He ate only until satisfied, savoring each bite. His days were filled with energy, his laughter hearty. Silas, however, was notorious for his feasting. His table overflowed with food, and he ate until he could barely move. He boasted of his large portions and the pleasure he derived from them. One harsh winter, a sickness swept through Eldoria. Thomas, though working diligently in the cold, remained strong. Silas, despite his warm hearth and abundant food, fell ill. He grew weak, his usual boisterousness replaced by a weary cough. While Thomas continued to thrive, Silas’s farm, and his health, withered.
