சென்னை நகரம் சிறந்த நகரம் செந்தமிழ் வளரும் திருநகரம் மன்னர்கள் ஆண்ட மகத்தான நகரம் மாநகரம் எங்கள் சென்னை கடலோரம் நிற்கும் கலங்கரை விளக்கம் கண்களுக்கு இனிய காட்சியே தடமான மரீனா கடற்கரை உண்டு தமிழரின் பெருமை அதுவே கல்வியின் சாலைகள் நிறைந்துள்ள நகரம் கலைகளின் கோட்டை சென்னை செல்வர்கள் ஏழைகள் எல்லோரும் சேர்ந்து செழிப்புடன் வாழும் நகரம் பச்சையப்பன் கல்லூரி புகழ் பெற்றது பாரதி படித்த இடமது இச்சகத்தில் மிகவும் இனிய நகரம் இதயத்தின் நகரம் சென்னை சென்னை வாழ்க என்று பாடுவோம் செந்தமிழ் மக்கள் வாழ்க என்போம் என்றும் சிறப்புடன் விளங்கிடும் எங்கள் பெருமை சென்னையே

Chennai city is a great city A sacred city where pure Tamil flourishes A magnificent city ruled by kings Chennai is our metropolis The lighthouse standing on the shore Is a sight pleasing to the eyes There is the grand Marina beach That is the pride of Tamilians A city filled with schools of learning Chennai is a fortress of arts Rich and poor living together A city living with prosperity Pachaiyappa's College is famous That is where Bharathi studied The sweetest city in this world Chennai is the city of the heart Let us sing "Long live Chennai" Let us say "Long live Tamil people" May it always shine with distinction Chennai is our pride
Historical Context
Bharathiyar had a deep connection with Chennai (then Madras). He studied at Hindu High School and later at Pachaiyappa's College, which he mentions in this poem. Written around 1905-1910, this poem celebrates Chennai as a center of Tamil culture, education, and commerce. The reference to Marina Beach (மரீனா கடற்கரை) - one of the longest urban beaches in the world - and the lighthouse (கலங்கரை விளக்கம்) shows his love for the city's landmarks. Chennai was the hub of the nationalist movement in South India, and Bharathiyar worked there as a journalist for "Swadesamitran" and later "India" newspapers.
