நினைவுகள் வந்து மனதை வருடும் நிலா வெளிச்சம் போல் இனிதாய் கனவுகள் போலே கடந்த காலம் கண் முன்னே வந்து நிற்கும் பழைய நாட்கள் பொன் நாட்கள் பறந்து போன கிளிகள் போல் கழிந்த காலம் திரும்பாது கனவில் மட்டும் வருமே அது அன்னையின் மடியில் துயின்ற நாள் ஆனந்தமாய் இருந்த காலம் கன்னியர் கூட்டம் விளையாட்டு காலம் ஓடிப் போயிற்றே நினைவு என்னும் பேழையிலே நிறைந்திருக்கும் செல்வங்கள் வினை முடிந்து ஓய்ந்த நேரம் விரித்துப் பார்த்து மகிழ்வோம் நினைவலைகள் தூக்கத்தில் நெஞ்சினிலே மோதுமே நினைப்பவர்கள் கூடவே நிலைத்திருப்பார் என்றுமே

English Translation
Memories come and caress the mind Sweetly like moonlight The past like dreams Comes and stands before our eyes Old days, golden days Like parrots that have flown away The past time will not return It comes only in dreams The days when I slept in mother's lap The time when all was blissful Groups of young maidens playing Time has run away In the treasure chest called memory Lie stored many treasures When work is done and we rest Let us spread them out and rejoice Waves of memory in sleep Will strike against the heart Those we think of Will remain forever with us
Historical Context
Written around 1915-1918, during Bharathiyar's later years when he was reflecting on his life, this deeply personal poem explores the nature of memory and time. The poem moves from the universal experience of nostalgia to specific memories of childhood with a mother's care. For Bharathiyar, who was orphaned young and lived much of his adult life in exile, memories carried profound significance. The metaphor of memory as a "treasure chest" (பேழை) beautifully captures how we preserve precious moments. The final stanza offers consolation: those we remember live on within us.
