Historical Context
This poem is Bharathiyar's homage to Tamil, personified as a divine mother. Written around 1910-1916, it reflects the Tamil Renaissance movement's emphasis on linguistic pride. Bharathiyar references the three major classical works: Tolkappiyam (the oldest Tamil grammar), Thirukkural (ethical masterpiece), and Silappadikaram (the epic of the anklet). The poem affirms Tamil's status as a "semmozhi" (classical language) - a status officially recognized by the Government of India in 2004. The phrase "நிலவும் வரை" (as long as the moon endures) echoes the classical Tamil blessing for eternal existence.
