வீரன் என்பவன் யாரடா? வெருக்கொள்ளா நெஞ்சன் அவன் தீரன் என்பவன் யாரடா? திடமான மனம் கொண்டவன் அச்சம் என்பது அவனுக்கில்லை அடங்காத துணிவு உண்டு இச்சை எல்லாம் வென்றிடுவான் இமயம் போல் நிற்பான் காண் நாட்டுக்காக உயிர் தருவான் நடுங்காது எதிர்த்திடுவான் கேட்டவர்க்கு உதவி செய்வான் கீர்த்தி பெற்று வாழ்ந்திடுவான் சொல்லில் வீரம் வேண்டும் செயலில் வீரம் வேண்டும் எல்லா நேரமும் வீரம் இதுவே வாழ்க்கை நெறியாம் வீரமின்றி வாழ்வு இல்லை வெற்றி இல்லை உலகில் ஆரம் போல் வீரம் அணிந்து அழகாய் வாழ்ந்திடுவோம்

Veeran enbavan yaaradaa? Verukkollaa nenjan avan Theeran enbavan yaaradaa? Thidamaana manam kondavan Achcham enbadhu avanukku illai Adangaadha thunivu undu Ichchai ellaam vendriduvaan Imayam pol nirpaan kaan Naattukkaga uyir tharuvaan Nadungaadhu ethirththiduvaan Kettavarkku udhavi seyvaan Keerththi petru vaazhndiduvaan Sollil veeram vendum Seyalil veeram vendum Ellaa neramum veeram Idhuvey vaazhkkai neriyaam Veeraminri vaazhvu illai Vetri illai ulagil Aaram pol veeram anindhuu Azhagaay vaazhndiduvom
English Translation
Who is a hero? He whose heart knows no fear Who is a brave one? He who has a firm mind Fear does not exist for him He has unconquerable courage He will conquer all desires See, he stands like the Himalaya He will give his life for the nation He will oppose without trembling He will help those who ask He will live gaining glory Valor is needed in speech Valor is needed in action Valor at all times This is the way of life Without valor there is no life There is no victory in the world Wearing valor like a garland Let us live beautifully
Historical Context
Written during the freedom struggle around 1908-1918, this poem defines heroism in Bharathiyar's vision. Unlike traditional martial valor, his hero conquers desires and serves the nation selflessly. The comparison to the Himalaya (இமயம்) represents unwavering strength and India's spiritual heritage. This poem inspired freedom fighters and continues to inspire young Tamils. The phrase "வீரமின்றி வாழ்வு இல்லை" (Without valor there is no life) became a rallying cry. Bharathiyar's concept of வீரம் combines physical courage with moral and spiritual bravery.
