எப்பொருள் எத்தன்மைத் தாயினும்
அப்பொருள் மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்பது அறிவு

English translation
True wisdom is seeing the essential truth of every object, regardless of its external appearance.

This is one of Thiruvalluvar's most profound statements on knowledge. Regardless of how things appear externally (எத்தன்மை), wisdom means perceiving their மெய்ப்பொருள் - their ultimate, essential reality.

எந்தப் பொருள் எப்படித் தோன்றினாலும், அதன் உண்மையான இயல்பை அறிவதே மெய்யுணர்வு. இதுவே அறிவுடைமை. புறத்தோற்றத்தை மட்டும் பார்க்காமல், உள்ளே இருக்கும் உண்மையை உணர வேண்டும். இது மெய்யுணர்தல் அதிகாரத்தின் முக்கிய கருத்து.

Story behind this kural
The village elder, Tharan, was known for his sharp eye. One day, a merchant arrived, displaying a shimmering gem. Villagers marveled at its brilliance, some claiming it held the light of the sun. Others whispered it possessed magical properties. Tharan examined the gem, turning it over in his calloused hands. He saw the intricate facets, the way light danced within. He then asked the merchant about the gem’s origin. The merchant, eager to sell, spoke of a faraway mountain and a hidden cave. Tharan listened patiently, then led the merchant to a nearby stream. He held the gem to the water, and showed the villagers how the gem’s true beauty was a reflection of the water’s clarity. He then pointed out a simple stone, also reflecting the light. The villagers, now seeing both the gem and stone, understood something new about the world.
