தன்னோடு பகலற்க பகைபிறக் கொண்டு

Ikalaṟka evvuyirkkum eṉṟum

Taṉṉōṭu pakalaṟka pakaipiṟak koṇṭu

English translation

Never bear enmity toward any being; never create internal division by harboring hatred.

Listen

Explanation

A dual warning: avoid enmity (இகல் அற்க) toward all beings (எவ்வுயிர்க்கும்) at all times (என்றும்), and avoid internal division (பகல் அற்க) within yourself by harboring hatred. External peace requires inner peace.

Story behind this kural

In a quiet village nestled beside a whispering forest, lived two farmers, Arun and Bala. Arun possessed a bountiful harvest, his fields yielding plump grains and ripe fruits. Bala, however, struggled, his crops often failing. Envy gnawed at Bala. He began to spread rumors about Arun, whispering that his success was due to ill means. Arun, hearing of Bala's words, felt a pang of sadness but responded with kindness. He offered Bala seeds and shared his knowledge of the land. Slowly, Bala’s fields began to flourish. Seeing Arun’s generosity, the bitterness in Bala's heart melted away. He apologized to Arun, and they became the best of friends, their combined harvests now the envy of the entire village, not out of malice, but through shared joy. The village thrived, a testament to the power of understanding and compassion.
